Freedom camping in New Zealand

One of things travellers love most about campervanning in New Zealand, is the ability to freedom camp.  It allows you to stop at some quieter spots, closer to nature, and without the hustle and bustle of big campground.

Get Lost campervans are all certified self-contained with a green sticker, which means they have a fixed permanent toilet, and fresh and waste (grey) water storage on board.

Where can we camp?

You can camp on public conservation land, managed by the Department of Conservation:

  • within 200 m of an area accessible by motor vehicle
  • within 200 m of the mean low water spring line of any sea or harbour
  • on or within 200 m of formed road or a Great Walks Track.

Except where is it specifically prohibited or restricted – find more information here

There are over 500 responsible freedom camping sites in New Zealand, and there are some basic rules to follow when staying overnight:

Keep New Zealand beautiful

Always use a public toilet, or the toilet in your campervan.

Protect the environment
