Driving in New Zealand

A few things worth knowing.

New Zealand roads are beautiful, but they can take longer than expected.

Distances can be deceptive, roads can be winding, and weather can change quickly. If you are visiting from overseas, give yourself more time than the map suggests, take breaks, and remember that New Zealand drives on the left.

With standard insurance:
Standard insurance bookings are required to use the concierge pick-up and drop-off service between 9am and 4pm.

The concierge service is $100 each way, which includes airport transfer and a full handover.

Useful reminders:

  • Drive on the left
  • Allow more time than expected
  • Avoid overloading your day with driving
  • Take breaks often
  • Drive to the conditions
  • Be careful on gravel roads
  • Check weather and road conditions in winter
  • Carry chains where required
  • Ferry travel between islands is allowed

Road use note:
The vans are designed for normal roads and tracks suitable for 2WD vehicles. They are not designed for off-roading.

Driver Requirements

Who can drive.
All drivers need to meet the Get Lost driver requirements and have their licence uploaded/provided before travel.

Driver basics:

  • Minimum driver age: 21
  • Full licence required
  • International drivers are accepted
  • Licences not in English may require an international driving permit or approved translation
  • Additional drivers are included, as long as their licence is uploaded/provided and accepted
  • Maximum driver age: no fixed maximum, as long as the driver has a valid licence

Camping in New Zealand

Camp well. Leave well.

The Get Lost vans are fully self-contained, which means they can be used in freedom camping areas that allow certified self-contained vehicles.

That freedom comes with responsibility. Always follow local signs, council rules, DOC guidance, and responsible camping practices.

Take only photos leave only footprints.

Camping notes:

  • Freedom camping is possible where permitted
  • Paid campgrounds are useful for facilities like hot showers and laundries
  • Powered sites are not required
  • DOC campsites are a good option for many trips
  • Always dispose of waste properly
  • Empty grey water and toilet cassette at approved dump stations
  • Respect local communities and natural places

What to Bring

Pack for the road
The van includes the core gear you need for sleeping, cooking, storage, water, power, and basic living on the road.

You should bring:

  • Clothes
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Extra towels, if needed
  • Personal toiletries
  • Food and drinks
  • Any medication
  • Soft bags instead of hard suitcases

Storage note:

Returning the Van

A simple return.
Please return the van in a reasonable, tidy condition so it is ready for cleaning and handover to the next traveller.

Before returning:

  • Fill the fuel tank
  • Empty the grey water
  • Empty the toilet cassette
