What to pack for a New Zealand campervan trip

A good packing list for a campervan trip is shorter than most people expect. The van already covers sleeping, cooking, water, power, and the practical essentials. Your job is to pack for the road and the weather — not to refill the van with things you will not use.

Storage is limited, and that is part of what keeps travel easy. Pack light, pack warm layers, and leave space for the trip to stay flexible.

Bring these

  • Clothes for changing weather — layers matter more than volume
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Comfortable shoes for short walks and campsite stops
  • Personal toiletries
  • Any food preferences for the first day or two
  • Chargers for phones and devices

Leave these

Extra luggage, bulky gear, and “just in case” piles tend to make the van feel smaller fast. If it is already in the van kit — bedding, cooking gear, basic cleaning, safety essentials — you do not need another version of it.

Pack for movement. The best trips leave room to stop, change direction, and enjoy the road without rearranging a full load every morning.
